Thermal Imaging Cam

Thermal Imaging Camera

The Margaretta Fire Dept. has placed into service a Thermal Imaging Camera. This new technology allows firefighters to actually see through smoke. It allows finding trapped victims, hidden fire and can actually give a temperature reading. The unit is about the size of a video camera and displays a black and white image in the viewfinder. This unit is based on Military technology and can read to a +/- 1/10 of a degree. It takes an average reading of the entire area being scanned and gives an image with white items being "Hot" and black items being "Cold" with varying shades of gray in between. You are able to make out actual flames, see room layouts and more importantly see victims. The unit has a pyrometer option that gives a temperature readout in degrees. The unit has been invaluable in finding hidden fires in walls, attics and other concealed spaces. That helps reduce damage by finding the fire quicker in the precise location where it is burning.

The unit cost $23,000.00 and was purchased by the Margaretta Firefighters’ Association with Special Account funds. That fund is made up of donations, memorials and gifts given to the fire department specifically for equipment.
