Station Exhaust System

The Margaretta Fire Dept. recently installed a Vehicle Exhaust System in both the Main Street building and South Avenue building. The units attach directly to the exhaust pipe of each vehicle with a pneumatic coupling (bladder). When a truck is started a pressure switch starts an exhaust fan and pulls the exhaust fumes from the building. As the apparatus leaves the station a micro switch is activated about 6 feet from the door. The pneumatic bladder then deflates and the hose is retracted by a spring reel. When returning the truck is backed to the door and a member attaches the hose to the exhaust pipe and hit an inflation switch to blow up the bladder, the apparatus is then backed into the station. The unit shuts down after three minutes.

The funding for the system was a FEMA Assistance to Firefighter Grant that payed for 90% of the $63,000.00 system. We have for years been concerned with the amount of Diesel soot inside the station. Diesel soot is a known carcinogen. The vendor that received the bid was Plymovent Corporation which sold and installed the system. As part of the Grant agreement, members of the Fire Department assisted with installing the new electrical system to power the new components. The health and safety of our members, as well as people meeting in or visiting the building is now improved. Another benefit is utility savings as we can now run the apparatus for their daily checks in the winter months without having to open the overhead doors.
