 Computer Lab Project In 2003 the Margaretta Township Trustees and the Margaretta Firefighters’ Association went together to purchase computer equipment to improve our training capabilities. A two computer learning lab was set up using Dell Computers and a computer training system designed by Action Training Systems. The computer program consists of DVD’s and VHS tapes. When working at the work station the firefighter goes through an interactive program that lectures and then tests the student. They must complete each section before the computer allows them to continue. Some of the subjects include Firefighter I (25 parts), Firefighter II (15 parts), Apparatus (Pumping & Aerial Apparatus) Operation (10 parts), Hazardous Materials (3 parts), Technical Rescue (10 Parts), Rapid Intervention Teams (2 parts) and Emergency Apparatus Driving (3 parts) Once complete the program certifies the student to that level and we then have them complete the practical evolutions of each section. The VHS tapes can be shown in group training sessions either for new recruits or as a refresher for our current members. Along with the work stations we purchased a lap top computer and projector. This can be used in group training sessions, for Fire Safety Programs and as part of the package a "Fire Scene Simulator" was included. The simulator allow us to take digital pictures of local businesses and buildings and simulate a fire at that location. The simulator places flames and smoke in the actual picture. It allow the instructor to increase or decrease the flames as the students simulate their fire attack. Do well and the flames die down, make a mistake and they get worse. These programs have opened up many new avenues that allow for more realistic and intense training. The lab is open 24 / 7 to all members. Along with the above programs a quiz / test generator was included. It allows the instructor to make up a quiz or test for all aspects of Fire and Rescue. The test questions are all based on IFSTA standards (International Fire Service Training Association) and are certified by IFSTA. This assist each member in acquiring his / her certifications. The cost of the system was approximately $19,000.00 and split 50 / 50 between the Firefighters’ Assoc. and the Township.
