 Margaretta Twp. Fire Department

The Margaretta Twp. Fire Department was organized in 1951 to provide fire protection for the residents of Margaretta Twp. and Castalia Village. In 1968 Emergency Medical Services were added to the departments duties. In 1985 Advanced EMT's were added to the department. In 1989 a Paramedic level service was started. The department responds to between 600 to 650 calls annually or about 1.7 calls per day. These calls include EMS, Fires, Rescues and Public Service calls. The department covers about 50 Sq. miles of territory that includes everything from heavy industry to rural farm property as well as part of Sandusky Bay.

The Department consists of a Chief, Asst. Chief, 2 Captains, 2 Lieutenants with the remaining members being Firefighter/EMT's. All Officers take a competitive test to attain their rank. The allowed membership is 40 members, but averages around 20 to 25 firefighters.

The Department operates 3 pumpers, 1 tanker, 1 grass fire unit, 2 ambulances, 2 utility vehicles , 2 rescue boats and 1 special response trailers. All members are cross trained as firefighters and EMT's. Each new recruit must complete two State mandated courses. A Level 1  Fire course and a 130 Hr. EMT course must be completed within the first two year of becoming a member. All recruits are considered probationary until these courses are completed.

Beside the above courses, three drills a month are held for all members where training is continued. Each member must attend monthly training. Drills are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays each month. There is also a business meeting the 1st Monday of each month. EMS drills are held the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Each recruit must also complete an orientation program prior to receiving their protective clothing and being allowed to respond on the apparatus. This orientation program covers department operations and is designed to make each recruit familiar with our operation.

The Margaretta Fire Dept. is a combination department with both full time personnel and paid on call personnel. All members are paid for their services. All new recruits start at $10.50/Hr. and receive additional bonuses as they complete advanced training. Drills are also paid at $10.50/Hr.. The average member will make approximately $1,500.00 to $4,000.00 per year depending on how active he or she is. Each member also receives a longevity bonus every five years.

The Margaretta Firefighters Association is the social end of the department. All members of the department are members of the Association. The Association is responsible for fund raising activities and social functions such as picnics, dances, baseball tournaments and other social gatherings.

While no one will become rich working as a paid on call firefighter, the rewards of the job are priceless. You can experience no greater reward than helping your fellow man in his time of need. Extinguishing a fire, helping someone who is ill, rescuing someone from entrapment or saving a human life. No greater reward can be realized in any other type of job.

The Margaretta Fire Department is proud of its members, its record, its accomplishments. We will continue to strive to be one of this country's best fire departments. With your help we will be able to reach our goals. Thanks for your interest.
